Many casinos closed in Reno due to Covid and those properties are now converted into housing. We stayed in the old Harrah’s Towers with a nice view. The city center is clean but overrun with homeless people. Community security is plentiful, and streets are washed every morning. However, a week was enough in a stuffy hotel room!
Art installations, sculptures and murals punctuate Reno’s urban landscape. To beautify the downtown area of Reno through citizen participation, the mayor of Reno launched a street art project that is still ongoing. There is an annual 24-hour Mural Marathon competition during which artists compete for the best mural on the side of Circus Circus, along Virginia Street. Downtown and the Midtown District are home to more than 100 larger-than-life murals, painted by local, national, and international artists. In addition to captivating the eye, these murals add color and creativity to Reno’s urban landscapes. In part to reflect the unique influences of the city and in part to celebrate the inhabitants of Reno, “The Little Big City”.
