TAOS, NEW MEXICO
Taos, New Mexico is one of the oldest establishments in the US. Initially founded in 1615, it became a formal settlement in 1795 to act as a fortified plaza and trading outpost for native American Taos Pueblo (the town’s namesake meaning ‘red willow’), and Hispano communities. Situated at the foot end of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Taos is surrounded by the Carson National Forest to the east and the Rio Grande Gorge to the west. Heading north takes you to the ski areas of Taos Ski Valley, Red River, and Angel Fire. Nearby Wheeler Peak is the highest in New Mexico at 13,161 feet (4,011 m).
Covid provided some benefits. We were able to rent a hotel suite for three months and were often the only inhabitants. Our ‘apartment’ at the Sagebrush Inn offered a traditional Kiva style fireplace and we were provided with wood for a fire every night. It was winter and our first foray into real snow-living ever!
Besides being home to movie stars, famous artists, and historic figures like D.H. Lawrence, ‘Doc’ Martin and Kit Carson, the town maintains the original Taos Plaza with eclectic shops, restaurants, and art galleries. Nearby is the imposing Our Lady of Guadalupe Church that was completed in 1802 with adobe walls three to four foot thick. With just over 5,000 inhabitants, it is a cool place to have on a bucket list.
