The finest mountain scenery in the Southwest is found in the 1.5 million acres of the Carson National Forest. Elevations rise from 6,000 feet to 13,161 feet at Wheeler Peak, the highest in New Mexico. It plays host to many hiking trails, some of which will be shared in future posts. Trail #438 is a wide road that accommodated vehicles prior to Covid. With snow one day and sunshine the next day, the trail was easy but muddy in some places. We saw several beaver dams in the stream and strange prints along the hiking path.
