From the previous post, it is obvious that we are ‘up there’ in altitude. From Sabie we headed to Graskop (Grass Head). The town was set up in the 1880s as a gold mining camp, but it now serves as a tourist destination and the timber industry. Graskop is also home to one of the biggest mounds of sawdust in the world! This small mountain village provides easy access to some of the most stunning outlooks and popular natural attractions in eastern South Africa. Our first stop was at the Mac-Mac Falls. As with most tourist attraction sites, locals are allowed to display handmade products at curio stalls.
The Mac-Mac falls is the second highest falls in the Mpumalanga tour route, its shimmering waters plunge to a depth of 65m (213 ft.). A steep walk along a cement pathway (with many steps) takes you to the viewing platform above the falls. The path belies the gorge right next to you and creates a ‘wow’ moment when the falls and gorge appears. This waterfall was originally a single stream, but gold miners blasted it with dynamite to divert the river in an attempt to work the rich gold-bearing reef over which it plunges.
