At the northern end of the mighty Drakensberg Range and standing sentry at one end of the Blyde River Canyon is the most famous – and photographed – attraction in the region: the Three Rondavels. The harder rock layers on top eroded slower than the underlying softer layers of stone, which resulted in rock formations which resemble African rondavels.
‘Rondavel’ is a style of African hut known in literature as cone on cylinder or cone on drum. Collins dictionary describes it as ‘a circular often thatched building with a conical roof” found mostly in Southern Africa.
We mentioned the forestry town of Graskop in a previous post and had to go through it again. Lunch time was on hand and a delightful meal was had at the funky ‘Devine ME Eatery’ where Elsa was encouraged to lay down on one of the couches after too much sun! Great food and friendly staff.
