After all the celebrations, visits and many miles travelled, we opted for some time in the center of Cape Town for Elsa’s birthday and a fist-time experience for all of us. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Center Town to explore the old Castle, flower market, Bo-Kaap (Above the Cape), government buildings, Church Square, and other lesser visited areas. We drove to Houtbaai (Wood Bay) via beautiful Camps Bay and The Twelve Apostles Mountain range. Elsa and I walked the promenade on Sea Point with a view of the famous Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was prisoned.
On our departure day, we reconnected with Elsa’s cousin in Bloubergstrand (Blue Mountain Beach). The sights, smells and tastes of Cape Town are unique. We celebrated Elsa’s birthday at ‘The Famous Butchers Grill’ in the Cape Town Hotel and explored the Adderley Street Flower Market, one of the oldest markets in Cape Town where one can buy a bouquet of flowers or even arrange your own wedding floral plans. Of particular interest to share with Kyla was the Fynbos (Fine Bush). Fynbos is a vegetation that is unique to southern and southwestern South Africa. It is characterized by evergreen hard-leaved shrubs and there are 9000 species of Fynbos in the Cape area of which 2000 species are found on Table Mountain alone.
