Another reason for heading to Hermanus was a family wedding in Arniston, a town an hour or so away. Kyla’s cousin got married in a church funded by Elsa’s sister and husband in the original fishing village, with the reception on a farm just outside of town.
Arniston is a small seaside settlement on the coast of the Overberg region (Walker Bay), and close to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa. Prior to the wreck of the British ship, the Arniston in 1815, it is also known as Waenhuiskrans, an Afrikaans name meaning literally “Wagon house cliff”. So named after a local sea cave large enough to accommodate a wagon and a span of oxen.
With the Louw family dispersed all over the world, it was an opportune time for Kyla to connect with her cousins and their friends. We did have lunch and a wine tasting at La Vierge wine estate. No trip to South Africa can be complete without at least one wine tasting!
