Charleston, SC
Charleston, South Carolina is a sizeable city on the Atlantic Coast (74th largest in the USA) with a checkered, and fascinating past. It is situated at the confluence of the Ashley, Cooper and Wando Rivers flowing into the ocean. The city maintains a southern charm but is marred by shadows of the past from the Civil War, plantations and slavery. Today, it is a hub for foodies, artists and techies. We have visited Charleston several times, recent in November 2016.
Daytona Beach, FL
NASCAR is an American thing. It was started on the beach in Daytona, Florida by a few guys racing anti-clockwise in an oval shape. Today, it is one of the premier sports in the country with millions of fans and very wealthy sponsorships from some the major corporations. The Daytona 500 race is considered the ‘big daddy’ of the annual racing program and deserves to be observed at least once in your lifetime. Drivers race on a 35 degree track that is 1.5 miles long. I have been fortunate enough to attend three races there with these images from February 2002. Sadly, two of the four friends in the image have since passed away.
Naples, FL
The Gulf of Mexico curves around the west coast and panhandle of Florida. Known for its rich oil fields and terrifying hurricanes, the Gulf offers some of the best fishing around. We visited with our friends, Debbie and Sheldon Bond in June 2007. Sheldon is an official charter captain and his boat “007” was the host for a great day on the water about 10 miles offshore.
