Sagehen Trail, Truckee, CA, is seven miles from the town of Truckee and is a four-mile in and out trail. The trail is nice and flat in a valley, running along a meandering stream. Sagehen Creek is quiet enough that the short walk will make you feel far distant from any sign of civilization. The trail’s appeal lies in its meandering path that passes a variety of terrain, from creek side riparian to pine needle forest to wild flower meadows before reaching the edge of Stampede Reservoir.
Throughout the walk, golds mix with greens which mix with blues, as the natural mountain bounty is on full display. The early portion of the hike offers quite a few short offshoots that lead down to the creek’s edge and quiet areas to dip your feet. My hand line and fly tackle can be seen on the walking stick – just in case! We did 2.2 miles on the trail as the sun was setting fast. Sadly, a month after we left Reno, this whole area burned down, including neighborhoods around the town.
