Reno is in the back mirror as we crossed the high plains to Salt Lake City. Constantly above 5,000 ft above sea level, the landscape is interesting. You pass the National Dinosaur Park and some large lakes across the State of Nevada.
Salt Lake City left us with mixed feelings. Passing the great salt pans and famous Bonneville Flats (gear heads will know it well), the actual Salt Lake appeared. The water level was extremely low and not as spectacular as expected. But we were in awe of the largest and deepest open pit mine in the world. A smelter stack as tall as the Eiffel Tower emphasized the scope of the operation.
Most of the Mormon Church (CLDS) were under construction with limited access. Across the road, modern malls and fancy restaurants abound. Up on a hill is the state capital in a political tug of war. It feels as if the city is struggling to find its own identity in the modern world.
