'Real ID' in your Pocket?

Briefly mentioned in an earlier post, ‘Real ID’ is now a thing. As of October 1, 2020, you won’t be able to fly domestically without it. Your current driver’s license will not get you through TSA (Transportation Security Administration), as it does not meet the minimum security standards. All the begging in the world will not help.

What then, is a ‘Real ID’? It is a driver’s license (or identification card) that meets minimum security standards established back in 2005 in the Real ID Act. This came about based on recommendations made by the 9/11 Commission following the September 11th, 2001 attacks. Each state is independently responsible for the issuing of the new driver’s licenses and therein lies the rub.

Make sure to check your state requirements to obtain a Real ID as the process differs from state to state. A quick online search with your state and ‘Real ID’ will get you to the right portal. Most Real ID cards are marked with a star – either gold or black in the upper portion of the card. In California, a white star is situated inside a golden bear. Go figure.

If all else fails, use your current passport or trusted traveler program card such as Global Entry or Nexus. An expired passport won’t fly (pun intended).

Tip 1: The process is not difficult. Just pay the money and get it done.

Tip 2: If you live in KY, ME, NJ, OK, OR PA or RI, you are out of luck as your states are not there yet. Check from time to time for availability.
