Heading from Dahlonega to Blue Ridge takes you through national forests and beautiful country side. Every now and then a surprise ‘small town’ beckons with antique an store or outdoor market.
Who knew that the Amicalola Falls is the second highest in the USA (after Niagra). It is a must to stop at the Amicalola Falls State park for a number of reasons:
1) The water fall
2) The hiking trails
3) This is the start (or end) of the infamous Appalachian Trail – all 2,200 miles of it (depending who you ask).
We selected 2 routes to the top of the falls and then back again – claiming our 2 mile share of the Appalachian Trail. Twice we walked through the Arch at the visitor center to imagine a through-walk of six months (average time it takes).
Then the town of Blue Ridge revealed its secrets: a lot of wealth from Atlanta and the start of the Blue Ridge Railway line. Up-market shops and eateries compete for your business on the main drag. I also happened on a real gold pan – just in case for future use. We were lucky to make the acquaintance with the owners of Aska Lodge, a premier bed-and-breakfast just outside of town. Lasting memories: curvy drives along mountain sides, downed forests due to ice, hiking trails with surprises around every corner, good food and a private tub in our log cabin.
