Ireland 3 – Dublin to Cork County

First stop: Kildare and the National Stud Farm & Gardens  in Tully

In the rolling hills of Kildare lies a true national treasure: the stud farm for thoroughbred horses belonging to the Irish Nation. To add glamor to an already glamorous environment, a well maintained, original Japanese garden can be found on the grounds as well. This vision was created by Colonel William Hall-Walker, a wealthy Scotsman of the famous Walker whiskey brewery in 1906 to 1910. The Japanese garden was laid out by Japanese craftsman, Tassa Eida and his son, Minoru. Many champion horses were raised here, collecting millions in prize money. Second Stop: Rock of Cashel, County of Tipperary

The Rock of Cashel is one of Ireland’s most spectacular archeological sites which bristles with ancient fortifications. The castle is reputed to be the site of the conversion of the King of Muster by St. Patrick himself in the 5th century. In 1101, the Rock was donated to the Church by the king and hosts one of the most remarkable collections of Celtic and medieval architecture to be found anywhere in Europe. Most of the remnants  standing dates to the 12th and 13th centuries.

Third Stop: Blarney Castle and Gardens in the County Cork

Build nearly six hundred years ago by Cormac MacCarthy, this world landmark has been visited by millions of people. Perhaps it has something to do with the Blarney Stone, the legendary Stone of Eloquence, found at the top of the tower. Kiss it, and you will NEVER be lost for words. The first building was a wooden structure  and replaced by a stone structure in 1210. Besides the majesty of the Castle, the is also a tranquil garden of over 60 acres with sprawling parklands, avenues, arboretums and waterways. The garden changes constantly with the seasons, making it spectacular year round.

Fourth Stop: City of Cork

Cork is a university city in the province f Muster. It was founded during the Viking invasions around 915 and build on the river Lee. The river splits in two and divides the city center into islands. ‘Cork’ meaning ‘marsh’ and became a chartered city in 1185, so granted by Prince John. It is known as the ‘rebel city’ for their stance during the English Wars in the 15th century known as the War of Roses. Local refer to Cork as ‘the real capital’.
