Part two of the trip to Lubec took us across the Canadian border to Campobello Island which is the largest and only inhabited island in New Brunswick, Canada. It has a rich history as a summer resort destination.
From 1883, the Roosevelt family made Campobello Island their summer home. Today, the 32-room ‘vacation home’ of Franklin D Roosevelt is part of the Roosevelt International Park, a USA/Canadian collaboration opened in 1964.
Three miles from there is the Head Harbor Lighthouse which was manned by Coast Guard personnel from 1829 until 1986. It was abandoned until 2000 when 12 volunteers formed a non-profit to preserve and protect the lighthouse and grounds.
We were fortunate to randomly meet one of these folks and learned so much about the lighthouse. The rocky outcropping on which the station is set becomes an island at high tide and can only be accessed during low tide.
Visually, it was the most inspiring lighthouse on this rugged coastline on the Bay of Fundy for us.
