We rented a nice little home in Bangor, about 4 miles (6.5 km), away from the hospital where Elsa works. With a basement and a loft, it is perhaps too big for the two of us. But the living area offers a lounge, main bedroom, small bedroom (now office), kitchen and dining room. The home has porches or ‘mudrooms’ at the front and back doors. The big sell was the one-car garage to protect the car from the elements. We arrived in the rain with light snow here and there. But three days later, the first snow arrived, forcing us to leave the car at the of the driveway to exit easier early in the morning.
We bravely scraped that first snow away with a snow shovel like pioneers in the unknown. Just to get a real snowstorm two days later, dropping more than a foot of snow and ice rain. The big guns were called it as if it was impossible to shovel. And that was the first in a series of snowstorms. Nowadays, little snow falls are pretty much ignored.
We learned to drive in winter conditions with a front-wheel drive vehicle. We make a lot of stews and soups. We double-layer clothes in the house and triple to go outside. Winter socks, long johns, and hats are par for the course. The city roads and pavements are scraped after each snowfall and brine salt laid down to absorb the snow and create grip. It leaves an absolute mess on the car, but there is no other choice. What an adventure so far!
