Moosehead Lake is a deep, cold-water lake in Northwestern Maine. It is the largest lake in Maine, second-largest lake in New England (after Lake Champlain), and the largest mountain lake in the eastern United States.
Situated in the mostly undeveloped Longfellow Mountains, the lake is the source of the Kennebec River. There are over 80 islands in the lake, the largest being Sugar Island. Deer Island to the west being the second largest.
We cruised by both islands on the historical ‘Katahdin’, an old steamboat retrofitted with a diesel engine in the 70’s. A declared ‘historical place’ in Maine, the 200-ton ship is a living museum and managed by a nonprofit to preserve the glorious days of steam boating.
While Mother Nature provided clouds and fog for most of the day, it was still eerily beautiful on the water.
