Maine is the most northeastern state of the US on the Atlantic Coast and was admitted to the Union in 1820 as the 23rd state. It is the most sparsely populated state east of the Mississippi River. By all statistical measures, Maine is an economically depressed state. But the rugged beauty, challenging climate and character of its people have given Maine an importance beyond economic and political power.
Maine folks are tough, friendly, and open-minded. It is not unusual to see rainbow flags and BLM signs around homes. But it is not in your face, just a subtle reminder to mind your own business and respect everyone. Even with a large homeless population, we have not locked the front or back doors of our rental house in three months.
Our town of Bangor is fascinating now that we have started to explore it. We noticed several steeples, cupolas, and spires dotting the horizon. Many old churches have been repurposed into housing, town halls, storage, and businesses. We particularly value the restoration of these elegant designs rather than condemning them to the landfill.
