Arniston – Recovery at ‘Five Fishes’

As mentioned, Elsa finished up with the last set of radiation in her right hip on 23 December 2024, and the oncologists cleared her for a convalescence trip abroad. Our wonderful brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Irma, offered their beach home in Arniston, South Africa.

For the second time in two years, we tackled the 27-hour journey to South Africa. This time with a totally different purpose. We did not do long road trips, but stayed within a three-hour driving radius. Many of the places would be familiar from previous posts, so we will avoid too much history where appropriate and let the pictures tell a story.

Frank and Irma’s home is called ‘Vyf Vissies’ or ‘Five Fishes’, reflective them and their three children. The house was redesigned and repurposed to accommodate the whole family with spouses and grand children. It consists of three distinct areas. Downstairs is a suite for each adult family with a communal kitchen and dining room. The middle floor reflects the kitchen and living area, including a small theater, and upstairs are the private quarters of the owners.

Both are avid art collectors which is reflected throughout the home with paintings, sculptures, and collectables. The view from the patio is postcard perfect with a serious barbeque area. In all, one could not ask for a better place to chill and get stronger.
