Arniston – Fishing Industry in the Western Cape

The commercial fish of South Africa are fair and few, with and extensive, but demanding fish industry that totals 150 million kilograms (330.7 million pounds) of fish caught annually. Both small scale and large commercial fishing enterprises participate to satisfy the demand.

Most of the marine commercial fish that consumers know and trust – such as tuna, flounder, rockfish, grunts, snapper, and blackfish – are caught by deep-sea trawlers, small scale long-line fishing boats and handline fisheries. Trawlers make up for 94% of all catches.

It is in the interest of all parties to protect marine life on the South African coastline against over-use and exploitation.
